GLOBAL WARMING

We've had so many natural disasters in the last year - all 'once in a lifetime' events. It's like the earth is saying "enough!"

I'm beginning to think we're in for a rough ride. Maybe the end of life as we know it? Am I being paranoic? Or doomsdayist?

Every time I watch another catastrophic disaster (manmade and natural) on the news, I wonder if we've passed the point of no return and just don't realise it yet.

Or has it always been like this; but now we have better access to the images with improved news services etc? So we are more aware of it all?

Waddaya think? Armageddon or same old, same old?

I am ancient enough to recall the terrible winter of '62 /'63 when peoples unmentionables froze even as they ordered hot whiskey's

But yes I do think we're up the creek without a paddle.

I would have to admit to having similiar feeligs re armagedan. I have to take solace from the fact that the end of the world has been predicted so many times before to make its very prediction the only thing that's inevitable.

In the middle ages people were utterly convinced that all signs pointed to the apocolypse, what with the plauge etc, (O.K my history falls down but its true)

Unfortunatlely the doom mongers this time aren't monks looking in bibles but scientists in the antartic who actually might know what they are talking about. Still the bomb hasen't gone off yet has it and in the end of the day what can you do; so we might as well enjoy the party while it lasts.

makes you question the wisdom of the so called experts. Paid to guess, we must be mugs. what's happening now does not require an expert to explain. We are doing something that is not right,and the sooner we wake up to that the fact and the better for us all.

I find it difficult deciding which side of the fence to rest.
I am by profession a sparky, so a lot of the 'sustainble devlopment, lets-go-solar, and all-install-a-wind-turbine pro rah-rah-rah group have obvious holes in the arguments. On the other hand i am by nature a bit of a tree-hugger, so i wish the above would work. The sad truth is though, as much as i hope it will, I know deep down it wont.

Personally I think we passed the 'cliff edge' of global warming around a decade ago, and i think we (anyone 40 & under) will be the geneeration that sees the results.

For those who don't know. Global warming is pretty much a fact
However what remains in dispute is what is causing it...
Most people accept CO2 and man-made emissions is the principal cause, the few that don't ae generally financially incolvedd with those that matter the most i.e. the USA

For the UK the choice is a bad one
1) do we contibute more to global warming
2) do we drop our standard of living
3) do we go nuclear

it's sad but it boils down to those three choices

  Yeah it's hard to know what is a practical alternative (and even if as you point out to know whether global warming is a natural cyclic phenomenon or man-made disaster).
  
  Down here in the Antipodes we have this whacking great hole in the ozone layer which we couldn't've caused - we're not big enough.
  
  But we're building windfarms etc and we've signed the Kyoto agreement. We have a strong Green Party working at it all.
  
  If global warming has happened before were humans on the scene then? Or was it just the dinosaurs that got wiped out?
  
  Anyway we have had a wonderful mild winter down here and a very early spring so global warming is working for us down here - so far and except for that hole in the ozone!
  
  The US and Australia have to pull their weight in this - they won't take responsibility for their massive fossil fuel use. Actually it's kind of ironic that the extremeness of Katrina was caused by global warming??? Wonder if they'll wake up now?

There have always been catastrophic events in human history and way way before. There have been countless periods of global warming and cooling over hundreds of thousands and millions of years.

We used to receive visitations from Jehovas Witnesses every Sunday afternoon when I was growing up. I used to invite them in if my folks were out, for a chat. They always said the same World Is Going To End stuff. And it never did. This was back in the late 70s, too.

The human population is so dense and so widespread now that a tornado that would have gone through a quiet backwater in say 1940 would today smack straight through a couple of trailer parks or something. Same thing applies with earthquakes.

I think we are too addicted to what the television and "experts" tell us. Many are engaged in climate research that pays them very handsomely. They have to keep up with the scaremongering warnings to keep their funding going. And also they are in the pockets of the Polit-liars who have other agendas going on to make money out of renewable energy such as wind power, which does not make any difference to the amount of coal and oil being burnt in conventional power stations. This seems incredible but its a fact. They know this but are making money from it.
